Overview

Mount Argopuro, a former active volcano in East Java, rises to 3,088 meters and is part of the Iyang mountain range in Probolinggo. It is famous for having the longest trekking route of any mountain on Java, making it a true challenge for hikers who want to experience untouched wilderness. Along the way, trekkers encounter historical relics dating from the Prehistoric era through the Japanese occupation. One of the highlights is Rengganis Peak, which not only offers sweeping views but also contains archaeological remains in the form of terrace complexes believed to be linked to the legendary Goddess Rengganis of the Majapahit era.

This special hiking program includes a ceremonial flag‑raising at the summit to honor Indonesia’s Independence Day on August 17. It is open to all participants who meet the requirements and offers a rare chance to combine adventure, history, and national pride while exploring one of the most fascinating mountains in Indonesia.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 – Surabaya City Tour and Start of Climb

Participants gather in Surabaya by 08:00 for introductions and equipment checks. The day begins with a short city tour to understand Surabaya’s heroic history, visiting landmarks such as the Heroes Monument, Tapered Bamboo Monument, the Sura and Baya statue, and the House of Sampoerna Museum. Around 10:00, the group departs for Baderan in Besuki, a four to five hour drive. After lunch and a detailed climb briefing covering terrain, weather, and safety, the ascent begins at 15:00. The first camp is set up by a small river on the slopes of Argopuro. Dinner is prepared together, followed by storytelling and relaxation before resting early to adapt to mountain conditions.

Day 2 – Trekking to Cikasur Savanna

After breakfast and packing, the group tackles a demanding six‑hour trek across steep slopes and dense forest. Water management is crucial as supplies are limited. By afternoon, the group reaches Cikasur, a vast savanna with a river and remnants of a Japanese army camp and airstrip. Wildlife such as partridges, wild dogs, and various bird species may be spotted. Camping here offers a magical night under a clear sky filled with stars, a reminder of the vastness of the universe.

Day 3 – Cisentor Camp and Rengganis Peak

The morning begins with a refreshing river bath, followed by breakfast and prayers. A two‑hour trek leads to Cisentor, a riverside camp surrounded by lush forest. After setting up camp, participants prepare for the highlight: climbing to the summit of Argopuro to raise the Indonesian flag. The journey continues to Rengganis Peak, where ruins and a tomb linked to Princess Rengganis add a mystical dimension to the trek. The group then returns to Cisentor for rest and overnight camping.

Day 4 – Garden of Life (Telaga Taman Hidup)

Breakfast and packing are followed by a cautious trek along narrow, steep paths with ravines requiring full attention. The reward is Telaga Taman Hidup, a serene lake surrounded by green pastures. Here participants can swim, fish, and relax by the water. Camping by the lake provides a peaceful final night on Argopuro.

Day 5 – Descent to Bremi and Return to Surabaya

The final trek takes about two hours downhill through towering trees. At Bremi village, participants enjoy fresh cow’s milk from local farms before concluding the five‑day adventure. The group then returns to Surabaya, completing the journey.
